A Verona couple with ties to Stone County have been charged in connection with the death of a three year old child.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office was contacted at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, regarding the death of a child with suspicious circumstances after that child had been taken to a local hospital.

An autopsy was conducted on the child and the determination was made that the child’s death was a result of blunt force trauma.

The results of the autopsy and investigation by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the Lawrence County Coroner have resulted in the filing of charges by the Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney.

Sarah Garbee, 26, of Verona, the mother of the child and Caleb Williams, 24, and also of Verona, who is the boyfriend of Garbee and residing together have each been charged with Abuse of a Child–Neglect Resulting in Death and are currently residing in the Lawrence County Jail under a $100,000.00 bond each.

The investigation is still active and ongoing at this time, according to Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

Garbee and Williams both appeared in Lawrence County courts on Monday, July 29. Garbee entered a plea of not guilty, according to online court records. She will next appear in court on Monday, August 5, before Judge Robert George. Williams also entered a plea of not guilty on Monday. He will appear before Judge Scott Shelby Sifferman on Thursday, August 22. Online court records also indicate the state, as represented by Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney Trotter, objects to any reduction in bail for Williams.

The victim was three year old Reid Garbee. Services were held for him at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Billings on Thursday, August 1.
