The Route 76 bridge in Cape Fair, which carries over 4,000 vehicles per day, was built in 1957 has needed frequent repairs. Following the Labor Day weekend, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) began replacing the driving surface (bridge deck), railings, and installing new guardrails at the bridge’s ends.
Notices are in place at Routes 173 and 413/248 in Elsey and Hwy 13 and West Hwy 76 in Reeds Spring, notifying drivers of the bridge closure. Drivers should expect bridge closure Monday through Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. However, temporary traffic signals will allow one-lane traffic over the bridge between 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and during the weekends.
On Tuesday, September 15, both lanes were closed for an extended time due to an equipment malfunction, according to a telephone interview with MODOT.
MODOT chose to use the autumn and winter months to replace the bridge to not interfere with the tourist season. Initially, December 31 was the projected completion date for the project. However, according to a spokesperson, they are now aiming for mid-December to finish the project.
