Sonny Boyd has always helped the folks in Reeds Spring. Now the towns residents are coming together to lend him a helping hand.
Last fall,  Sonny Boyd, a lifelong resident of Stone County, went to visit his sister, Connie Campbell, who lives near Chadwick. Campbell had lost her husband, Tim, just a few weeks prior, due to complications of diabetes and a heart disease.
Cool weather was beginning to set in, and Boyd wanted to make sure his sister had everything she needed. When he stepped inside her house, he was shocked by what he saw.
All of Campbell’s kitchen appliances had fallen through the floor. They were setting on the ground below. Boyd noticed one of the grates was gone from her stove. His sister told him a racoon had come in and taken it. While there, he noticed raccoons were not the only animals coming into the house through the gaping hole in the floor.
Boyd knew he could not let his sister live under such deplorable conditions.
Boyd immediately began looking for another home for his sister. Because she wanted to remain on her property, he had to look for a mobile home.
The first two he found were sold before he could get the money to pay for them. Then he found one that knew would be perfect for her. Boyd rushed to his bank and took out a loan so that he would be certain that his sister would have comfortable living conditions for the winter.
Boyd’s friend, Tina Dillon, owner of Lil Sis’s Creations, in Reeds Spring, heard about Boyd helping his sister. She jumped in and began looking for some help. Dillon called the Reeds Spring chapter of the Eagle Riders motorcycle club. Right after Thanksgiving, the club put together a small benefit for Boyd and raised enough money to have the land cleared to set the mobile home.
At the beginning of this year, Boyd, 61, fell ill and was hospitalized for a heart condition. When Dillon heard about Boyd’s illness, she realized the debt he incurred to help his sister would be too great for this hardworking Reeds Spring maintenance employee. She knew she wanted to help once again.
Dillon got back on the cell phone and this time recruited several area business owners to help in holding  another benefit for Boyd.
“Sonny helps a lot of people in this town,” Dillon stated. “I just think we need to help him for a change.” So, together, Dillon’s shop, Dinky’s Diner and Jim’s Historic Barber Shop, along with several Reeds Spring area residents are holding a benefit luncheon and auction. The group is hoping to pay off the cost of the mobile home.
The benefit luncheon and auction is Sat., Feb. 27, at the WPA Community Building in Reeds Spring. The dinner will consist of ham and beans and cornbread or homemade chicken noodle soup. A variety of desserts will be offered as well. The fee will be $5.00 per person. The meal will be served from 12 noon to 2 p.m. The auction will begin at 2:30 p.m. All auction donations must be delivered or arranged to be picked up the day before. Financial donations are being taken at Dinky’s Diner. Dillon invites everyone to come enjoy some good home cooking while helping out Sonny and his sister. For more information, call 417-559-9443.
